Wendy Laurel\u2019s photography is a celebration of color, light, and spontaneity. Known for her bright palettes and captivating analog images, she captures the spirit of her subjects with an authenticity that feels both timeless and fresh. Your portfolio is bursting with vibrant colors. Can you tell us a bit more about your relationship with color and how this became a big part of your work?<\/span><\/p>\n

I have always been drawn to bright pastel colors. My earliest memories include colors and I remember begging my parents for a yellow and orange stripe around my room. When I discovered film and the colors I could get from it, I was sold.<\/p>\n

Seeing people working exclusively with film is always inspiring. Why do you gravitate to using film in your work?<\/span><\/p>\n

Honestly, it\u2019s the way it handles color and light without needing post-processing. It\u2019s like magic. The colors I get from shooting Kodak film and the sunshine of where I live are exactly what I\u2019m looking for.<\/p>\n\n \n \n \n

For those used to only digital, the world of analog can seem out of reach. Do you have advice for people who want to incorporate more film into their creative process? <\/span><\/p>\n

The truth is film is much easier to shoot than digital. The cameras are simple. You set your aperture and your shutter speed, and that’s it. I don\u2019t have to worry about white balance or color tones or do much post-processing work. I shoot colors I love, I point the camera at the sun, I have a lot of fun, and I send it to the lab. Magic comes back.<\/p>\n

Of course, we can\u2019t not ask about your favorite film stock and cameras. What will you always bring in your camera bag?<\/span><\/p>\n

I love Kodak Ektar film as my favorite, but also shoot Kodak Gold, Portra 160 and 800. I love love love having a simple point and shoot 35mm camera on me all the time, but also shoot medium format a lot for paid work.<\/p>\n\n \n \n <\/div>\n

Last but not least, my personal favorite question to ask artists who clearly excel at getting their models to feel relaxed, at ease, and spontaneous in front of the camera: how do you create the perfect setting for this to happen? <\/span><\/p>\n

Gosh, that is such a good question. I don\u2019t know if I have the answer, as it\u2019s something I am always struggling with. But setting a very low bar for them and lots of comfort and laughing at myself a lot helps. Letting them know it\u2019s not that serious and there is no wrong thing for them to do and letting them know I make mistakes all the time and mistakes are good things. Basically, creating a no-pressure zone. Also, movement\u2026 if they are moving, they are not thinking about posing, and very often, it\u2019s those in-between moments that are the winners.<\/p>\n\n \n \n <\/div>\n

Do you have any goals or plans that you are excited about?<\/span><\/p>\n

Right now I am more of a day to day mindset and not thinking too hard about the future. I focus on being grateful for what I am doing in this moment and day. As you may know, I live in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii and in the wake of the devastating Lahaina Fire, I have been also working as an attorney for the folks who were harmed and damaged by the fire. That has kept me pretty busy but Im still shooting every day as well.<\/p>\n\n \n \n <\/div>\n

What is your motivation\/driving force to create your work?<\/span><\/p>\n

The light, the colors, the feeling I get when I shoot or see those colors. I am drawn to it and really couldn\u2019t stop if I wanted to. It brings me an immense amount of joy.<\/p>\n\n \n \n \n

<\/div>\n \n \n \n

If you could execute any idea \u2014 with no budget restraints or logistical limits \u2014 what would it be?<\/span><\/p>\n

I would love to get a large group of Hawaii women together on the beach and shoot them in many different ways. I have a photograph on my wall someone else did of a large group of nude women standing in a peace sign configuration in black and white. I would love to recreate that in color here in Hawaii and also just have a group of women so large it makes a crowd on the beach and shoot layers of them in many different ways. Now that you ask that question, it\u2019s probably something I could make happen with not much effort, so maybe that should be my plan I\u2019m excited about. Thanks.<\/p>\n\n \n \n <\/div>\n

Do you have any hidden talents besides creating your wonderful work?<\/span><\/p>\n

I’d like to think I\u2019m a good mother, but raising four children has taught me I am definitely a work in progress. The talent I have is for embracing my mistakes and trying every day to do better, to be aware, to grow, and to admit when I’m wrong and make amends. I am convinced that the longer I’m alive, the less I truly know.<\/p>\n

How do you ensure that your work remains enjoyable and that you don\u2019t burn out when creating new content?<\/span><\/p>\n

I just keep shooting what I love wherever that is, and as I move through different phases of my life, that may change. Currently, I\u2019m liking being in the water and shooting with my Nikonos. But water, sunshine, and color will also be my go-tos.<\/p>\n\n \n \n <\/div>\n

What is the one bit of advice you wish you had known from the start?<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s okay to make mistakes and it’s unavoidable.<\/p>\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n

Creative blocks can happen to everybody; what works for you to get out of them?<\/span><\/p>\n

Sleep, reading, poetry, prayer, and meditation. Usually a creative block means I’m tired or run down.<\/p>\n\n \n \n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
