Cicada exuvia clings to the bark of an oak tree trunk

After several years living underground as nymphs, cicadas usually emerge from the soil at night. After emerging, they climb a tree trunk or other object and undergo the moulting process. After emerging, the adult cicada will then fly away leaving the exuvia behind.
